55+ Positive Lifestyle has run several successful forums over the past six years, covering subjects as diverse as transport in rural areas, the workings of local government and “taster” sessions in crafts and leisure activities.

“Recycling”

Teign School, Kingsteignton

The meeting was very well attended, with lively discussion and plenty of opportunity to question the decision-makers about the recycling policy in Teignbridge.  Representatives from the Council kept us well informed and were able to answer the barrage of questions from the audience.  There was also an opportunity to find out more about composting and wormeries, and to hear about a new scheme starting in the area for the refurbishment and resale of used electrical items and furniture.

“Here and Now” Arts & Crafts in Teignbridge

Friday, 24th October 2003 at Buckfast Abbey

For the first time ever, we had to stop taking bookings for the Forum well ahead of time.  Sorry to have disappointed those who could not attend, but the Abbey simply could not take more than 120 people.

This was a busy, lively, happy day with 13 artists running a total of 20 workshops throughout the event.  It can best be summed up by the following account, written by a 15-year old student who was on a work experience week and came along to help out……

The View from a Teenage Eye

“I went to the 55+ Forum not knowing what I was going to do.  I was told it was workshops for the older generation, this I though would be not much fun.  When I arrived I knew nothing about the place and none of the people there and what tasks I would have to fulfil.

The talk by David Leach was very inspiring for me and for all the people participating in the workshop.  The day then progressed and as it did I felt more and more welcome and felt how I fitted in.  The cafeteria then put on a beautiful lunch and everyone rallied around to say what a great morning they had had.

We complete some workshops in the afternoon and there was a closing ceremony and by this time I felt very warm inside my heart and I did not want to leave.  Seeing all the people walking away with their crafts and being proud of something they had done really put a smile upon my face.

If I could join in again then I would not hesitate to do so.”

Our 17th Forum, “Healthy Heart”, took place on Thursday 29th May 2003 at Dawlish Community College.

Heart and circulatory disease is the UK’s biggest killer; about 27,000 people suffer a heart attack every year.

Speakers gave advice on how to reduce the risk of heart disease, through diet, exercise and not smoking.  NHS nurses were on hand throughout the day, offering blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol checks.
